The past two weeks has been great in the Mosquito Lagoon. The water levels are high and mullet and white bailt can be found everywhere. There has been some great catches including many firsts and biggest when it comes to redfish. I have been seeing them good numbers schooled up in the middle region working their way south. The top producer when it comes to artificial baits has been a Gulp 4" Fluke in the electric chicken color. I rig this to a "Texas Rigged" a sliding bullet weight in front of a 3/0 Daiichi offset Bleeding Bait hook working the lure across the front of the school jigging it ever so slightly as the school swims over the bait. Remember that your bait should mimic a fleeing bait fish so work the bait appropriately.
Trout have been fired up the last two weeks in the Mosquito Lagoon following the roving bait schools. The massive quantity of tightly packed schools at times must be to much for the trout to handle finding them worked into a frenzy and striking anything you throw at them as soon as it hits the water. Gold spoons and Mirrolure 7m twitch baits have been trout slayers allowing the angler to cover a ton of water and making locating schools easier in the areas of dirtier water.
The weather is getting cooler but the bite is still hot out on the Lagoon system. October is one of the best months to stalk down large bull redfish in the Mosquito Lagoon and with the first days of Fall already upon us full days on theses beautiful waters will be more enjoyable.
'Til the next bite...
